Yet more evidence of an Anglo Saxon community in the grounds of Goldingham Hall, Bulmer, was discovered at a recent archaeological dig.
Funded by a £1,500 grant from Braintree District Council’s Mi community initiative, Stour Valley Community Archaeology employed professional archaeologists from Access Cambridge Archaeology from the University of Cambridge for the September 11-13 dig.
Laure Bonner, the group’s chairperson, said: “This is a complex site, potentially of national importance, and their expertise is required.
“We had a brilliant three days of excavation. We were able to have 33 children from Bulmer Primary School come to visit and they did several archaeological activities to tie in with their theme of the Anglo-Saxons.”
The biggest discovery of the excavation was the revelation of two rows of post holes dating from approximately the 9-11th century.
“The postholes are all that’s left of a once large wooden structure which we believed to be the domestic area of a large late Anglo-Saxon manor,” said Ms Bonner.
Next up for the archaeology group is field walking in Mount Bures, on October 10-11.
This is followed by the AGM at Lavenham Village Hall on Friday, November 13, where Professor Carenza Lewis will be the guest speaker.
