Following its earlier revealing survey of ancient longhouses, the Duddon Valley Local History Group has taken this project one stage further. With the help of the Lake District National Park Authority and the National Trust it has made a successful bid for funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Council for British Archaeology, Sir John Fisher Foundation, Copeland Council and CGP Group as well as other granting bodies to carry out excavations on three potentially medieval long houses in the Duddon Valley over the next three seasons. The aim of the project is to find out when the longhouses were built (they may even be Norse in origin) and establish how medieval people settled and farmed in this area. Volunteers are needed to help with all aspects of the project. Ken Day, Chairman of the History Group, said: “This is a really exciting time for us. Our members have spent over seven years surveying the Duddon Valley and to be able to carry out this excavation is a fantastic achievement for all concerned.” Full story: www.cumbriacrack.com/2016/04/04/duddon-valley-medieval-longhouse-excavations-volunteers-needed/
