ARCHAEOLOGISTS believe they could be on the verge of a significant discovery of an unknown Iron Age settlement which was in use for 1000 years.Volunteers at Yarrows Heritage Trust (YHT), along with experts from the University of the Highlands and Islands, have uncovered structures and finds which show signs of a settlement at Swartigill. As part of the Swartigill Burn Iron Age Project – teams discovered items which have excited experts about what could lay underneath the land between Thrumster and Haster. YHT vice-chairwoman Islay Macleod said the dig was an exploratory exercise to identify anomalies uncovered last year. She said the team’s initial impressions are they have found something substantial and relatively undisturbed. “It is too early to say what it definitely is,” she said. “But early suggestions are it could be an Iron Age site which has been in occupation for around 1000 years."
